"What is SCIP?" you may ask.
SCIP stands for Surgical Care Improvement Project. It started with the National Quality Forum a few years ago. The goal is to improve the quality of care delivered to patients having surgery in hospitals across the nation.
As the years have gone by, the science guiding the care of patients has continued to grow. Some of the scientific studies have proven that current practices are good and right on target. Other studies have revealed places where the traditional practice is not "best practice." There has been a tendency among physicians to practice exactly the way they were taught in medical school...no matter how long ago or how outdated that information may be today.
The goal of SCIP is to drag those practitioners and organizations that are "stuck" in the past...into the 21st century...sometimes kicking and screaming!
In future blogs I will reveal the growing pains and discoveries that have led to my current understanding of the SCIP standards. Please understand that anything I say here is strictly my own opinion and does not represent the stand of any other organization, facility, group, or person. I plan to use this mode as a way to "sound off" and deal with the frustration of dealing with this brand new (for me) area of knowledge.
